Prepare for a migraine appointment
Bring your diary, medication history and a few questions. This practical checklist helps you organise what you want to discuss with your clinician.
Put your records together
A useful starting point is your headache diary, a medication list and the questions you want answered. Ask the clinic beforehand if it needs a particular form, date range or file format.
The American Migraine Foundation’s guide to a first headache-specialist visit recommends preparing your headache history, a diary and relevant medical information. This includes current and past medications, allergies and other conditions.
Keep your existing clinical records alongside your app report. Migraine Tracker contains the information you entered into it; it is not your complete medical record.
Check the report before you share it
If you use Migraine Tracker, open your history and check the entries you plan to discuss. An estimated time or a missed entry is useful context to mention.
Then look at the reporting period. A 30-day summary and a 90-day summary describe different windows. Make sure you and your clinician are looking at the same one.
The app’s PDF can bring together recorded headache days, acute medication days, pain, a calendar and monthly summaries. The two-page sample report shows the format with fictional data. PDF export requires Premium. Follow the step-by-step PDF guide for the exact screens and a page-by-page explanation.
Consider how you will bring the report:
- On your phone: save the exported file somewhere you can find at the appointment.
- On paper: open the PDF and print it if that is easier for you or your clinician.
- Through the clinic: use its preferred secure sharing method if it asks you to send information beforehand.
You do not need to upload your report to this website to use or view the sample.
Write down your questions
A short list gives you a place to return to during the conversation. Your questions might include:
- Which details would you like me to record between appointments?
- Is there anything in my diary you would like me to explain further?
- How should I keep a record of the effect on my work or daily activities?
- What should I bring to our next visit?
These are conversation prompts, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your clinician can help decide what your records mean and what to do next.
A short checklist
Before you leave, check that you have:
- Your diary or report, with its date range clear.
- Your current medication list and any relevant past medication information.
- Relevant records the clinic has requested.
- Your most important questions.
- A way to take notes during the appointment.
If your diary has gaps, bring what you have and explain them. The report is there to support the conversation, and it only represents the information recorded.
